Pink Porgy Snapper have the same great qualities as Tai Snapper, Red Snapper, and Dorade Royale. They are an undersung species that typically only get recognition from the Pacific variety. The Japanese have held the Porgy in high reguards for centuries. This is one of the most celebrated species in the Pacific, and the Atlantic holds an abundance.

Pink Red porgy, also known as pink or silver snapper, are an abundant bottom fish. They are a colorful fish, with a pink body and a yellow lateral line. Pinkies have molar-like back teeth, allowing them to dine on snails, crabs, worms, urchin, and small fish.

Their pectoral fins are yellow-orange in color and are quite long. If folded, the fins can almost touch the dorsal fin. The Pink Porgy’s dorsal fin also stretches far back with its anal fin only being half the length of it. The Pink Snapper also has a deeply forked tailfin that’s dull yellow but with red flecks on it. It has a medium-sized mouth and large eyes.

Where can the Pink Porgy Snapper be found?

Marine; benthopelagic; oceanodromous; depth range 0 – 820 ft, usually 32 – 260 ft. Subtropical; 51°N – 43°S, 98°W – 36°E

Eastern Atlantic: Strait of Gibraltar to 15°N (rare southward 20°N), including Madeira and the Canary Islands; Mediterranean and northward to the British Isles.

Western Atlantic: New York, USA and northern Gulf of Mexico to Argentina, including the continental coast of the Caribbean Sea.

How does the Pink Porgy Snapper look like?

Pink Porgy, also known as the Red Porgy or Pink Snapper, has a pale red but metallic color hence its name. It has an oblong-shaped body and a rounded nose. Although its fins are composed mostly of rays, it also has spines distributed among them so they can be quite sharp. On appearance, the Red Porgy’s fins can look quite sharp. However, it’s only the dorsal fin that one needs to be careful of. The rest have a stiffer, feather-like texture.

How does the Pink Porgy Snapper behave?

A Red Porgy usually likes to eat crustaceans, mollusks, and small fishes. Crustaceans such as small crabs and shrimps may strike its fancy. For mollusks, snails and clams can do the trick. Sometimes, a Pink Porgy would even eat an occasional squid or two.

Found over rock, rubble, or sand bottoms (young frequently found on seagrass beds and the continental shelf) down to about 820 ft depth, often above 492 ft. In southwest Brazil found in 500 ft depth.
